Description

Formulated with Soltex®, Genesis Gamma LS™ provides for the convenient and rapid application of sodium sulfonated asphalt to help remedy hole problems associated with shale.

Genesis Gamma LS™ provides the benefits of sulfonated asphalt in a liquid form. Such benefits as improved shale stability, lower filtrates, and thinner wall cakes are seen.

Application

When added, Genesis Gamma LS™ can be mixed directly into the drilling fluid. The liquid product mixes more easily than typical dry products that generate dusting hazards. Another benefit is that it quickly becomes fully incorporated into the fluid since it is already fully wetted with a water-soluble polyol. Many times, significant amounts of the dry products are lost in the first few circulations as it is screened out by the shale shakers and discarded with the drill cuttings.

The goal of the application is to maximize the wellbore benefits to reduce drilling costs and prevent wellbore instability and hole problems from causing non-productive time.

Recommended Treatment

Optimizing the utilization of Genesis Gamma LS™ includes a clear understanding of the current fluid and wellbore conditions. Based on the fluid and wellbore analysis, several treating options have proven useful: − Add 2 – 3 vol% to the active system and maintain while drilling the hole section to total depth − Prior to drilling the unstable formations, begin by adding 1/2 to 1 vol% to the active system and increase as hole conditions and fluid properties dictate − Pump periodic sweeps of 5 – 10 vol% and monitor hole conditions.
