Torque and drag reduction Drilling performance improvement
Designed to stay in the wellbore and perform, Extendrill™ utilizes unique chemistry that reduces torque and drag. Unlike conventional lubricants that are added to achieve and maintain a given concentration, Extendrill™ forms a lubricating film on the pipe and wellbore and is not circulated with the fluid. It remains in the wellbore, coating the drill string and formation with an effective lubricating film. Extendrill™ delivers lower torque and drag, increased rate-of penetration and reduced drilling costs.
When added, Extendrill™ is mixed directly into the drilling fluid at a prescribed rate. The product reacts with components in the fluid to create a lubricant that deposits itself onto the drill string and wellbore.
The ideal application of Extendrill™ is in a low-solids fluid with pH control and hardness present. The product is not sensitive to chlorides, calcium, or magnesium and has been utilized in fluids ranging from freshwater to high salinity-produced brine to saturated calcium chloride.
The initial additions should occur when the torque begins to increase above an acceptable level. The effect on torque is immediate. Applying Extendrill™ in this way reduces lubricant consumption and controls costs.
Another practice that has benefits is to treat the wellbore prior to tripping out to run production casing. When done properly, the drill string is pulled directly out of the hole without rotation or back reaming and casing is run to bottom easily.
Effective in low solids environments containing fresh water, cut brine, and calcium chloride, Extendrill™ can be utilized in all types of low-solids fluids. Many additives do not perform well in the presence of salinity and hardness, but this product is not affected by salinity and hardness. In many areas, some of the most cost-effective drilling practices utilize brinebased fluids. Utilizing this product to provide control of torque and drag within acceptable limits allows longer laterals to be drilled that improve well economics.
Additions of 0.5 gal/min are recommended to achieve a baseline performance. As the well is drilled the rate of addition is increased or decreased as needed to manage the torque and drag. Once the well is at total depth and the wellbore has been circulated clean, additional Extendrill™ should be added to allow for a trouble-free trip out and casing run.
